The fines aren't that much, you just have to pay for the book if you have not returned it and you have lost it.

well at my village library it was 5 or 10p a day over due
maybe £15? but it depends on your library
. . .
it tends to be more in acedemic libraries
in my university library its 50p a day

At least, all the ones I've visited have been.

Depending on the price of the book if you have lost it.
For example, Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman costs between £5 - £9
But If you have an overdue library book and you have it but still haven't returned it, it depends how many days it's over due, the library will charge you probably between 35p everyday. Thats what my library done to me with my Science revision book.

In scotland you don't pay fines on overdue books until you're 16. I'm assuming that it's the same over the border.
