Have you ever heard of the
Milgram
experiment? In the 60ies there was this study of psychology experiments conducted by psychologist Stanley Milgram.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment
"Ordinary people, simply doing their jobs, and without any particular hostility on their part, can become agents in a terrible destructive process. Moreover, even when the destructive effects of their work become patently clear, and they are asked to carry out actions incompatible with fundamental standards of morality, relatively few people have the resources needed to resist authority."
Can you see certain parallels to what happend in the forums in the last few weeks? Of course on a smaller level. But still.....
example:
http://www2.missbimbo.com/forum/p60866, … ongues.htm
Just think about it.... Admin/Mods/Players.....
EDIT:
Don't you think it is a little bit scary (on grander scale) that even in a barbie-like-game a lot of people (at least 25 % .... see above poll) are afraid to say how they feel because they are afraid of admins and mods? And the mods just being "made" from the admin with no REAL power (ok... if I get banned.... so what - I don't die)??? I have to admit it really makes me wonder what happens with the players/mods when they happen to stumble in situations with real descions to make.

Yea that is a pretty scary experiment, I leanred about it in some of my sociology classes. It shows how often people bow down to authority for the sake of authority. I don't want to be completely passive or recalcitrant, I just want to be able to give a good account of my life when I'm asked to. To be able to say I helped people, had friends who I loved/loved me, stood up for people who were weaker, stood up for my beliefs, wasn't scared etc.

Well, very interesting experiment there and in a way, 'cruel' too...
I believe I'm the type of person that others considered 'meek'... I follow the orders of authorities because I know they rule over me for a reason... Yet I don't hesitate in questioning their decisions if I simply feel suspicious...
I don't want to get into any trouble or hurt others because of an authority figure giving out a dangerous order/command, I would prefer that the person I followed is helping others...

i like what I am but I will not say I will not change as I need to change as I learn new things or as situations around me change to grasp opprotunities..or well survive. I may not want to live forever but I don't want to die to young either.
Authority at jobs? well I tend to pick the bits I like and the ones I don't I circumvent them as I see fit, especailly when it is for the general good. Maybe they should have quite telling us to think outside the box if they didn't want us to do this heh!.
Though if you wish to live by your morals and own rules you must have savings and other things in place so you can leave on short notice.
Now if we are talking about nazis...maybe your own self preservation gets into the way.. As if you refused you might die, or just get shipped to the russian front with a knife and no gun...

Of course it is easier if you are more independent... and it is just not a life-threatening situation.
But look at missbimbo: there are 25% of people who are too much afraid to say what they think because of the authority given to the mods and how the mods handle this responsibility. Isn't this like the experiment on a very small scale? What would this 25% do if a powerful person tells them to shut up? And what would (certain) mods do if they would get some real power?

I actually find it amusing, though, that his theory was that aggression was an innate German trait. And how surprised he was when he found anyone was capable of obeying orders without fail.
The experiments he did were to find out why the German na-zis were able to do such horrific stuff to each other and then later say they were told to at the Nuremburg Trials. >.>;;

The way I get talked to sometimes, I'd think the stanford prison experiment would have been suited as a better example. ^.~

I do what I'm told if I think I can learn something or grow from the activity but otherwise I won't do it or do it very half heartedly. I'm that irritating person in school who when a teacher says something unreasonable or untrue , won't keep my mouth shut about it.
When it comes to missbimbo however, I understand that I'm a consumer who has a choice in whether or not I want to play this game and I know that if I want to use someone else's website I must play by their rules. I also know that throwing tantrums about changes won't get me anywhere.

This is also a very interesting experiment... and I think you are right... it applies even better here...
I have to admit the whole forum situation since the new doll appeard intrigues me a lot. It is like a case study. The doll obviously intrigues me no more.

You are right... about the tantrums.
But a lot of people just tried to voice their opinion.
And I think you are wrong about the choice thing: because I for example invested about 20-30 EUR in this game. And I did it because I liked the product. But the product changend and I wasn't asked and to make matters worse I was told to leave instead of "moan" (from sweetasanut himself) or eventuelly get banned. And this is not how you behave to your customers. You can't sell them an iPOD and after 3 month you take it away and give them an old walkman instead.
So I'm still here lingering... just because I don't like to be daunted.
