My mother is the same way... she never adds salt to anything. You should see her face if she's in the kitchen when I'm making pasta and I add the correct amount a salt to the boiling water. She looks horrified, as if I just added gasoline to the water or something.

Hey guys! Just stopping in to say hi- it's been a hectic day for me... had a great interview for an awesome job this morning in one place and WAY across town (2 hours) mole removal surgery for some creepy looking cells I have going. Boo. Then I get to rush back home and help my mom move some stuff to her new house- which naturally is not really close to me (45 min.- not far, but not close).
But at least my interview went well! Whoo!
Nemaine- any update on your job? Did you actually get it?

Mini is here! Love the new thread. Great name, even if it is silly
So!
favorite foods? Curries and Masalas of all kinds, anything caprese, tirimisu. My single favorite food item that I could eat every day forever is tempeh.
least favorite food? Don't laugh, but anything white and creamy. Sour cream, cream cheese, frosting, mayonnaise, etc. It just... bothers me.
favorite thing to make? Clafouti because it's easy and I always feel so accomplished. Also my homemade baked spaghetti sauce. Minimal chopping, maximum goodness.
favorite cuisine to eat out? Health food or vegetarian restaurants. Since I am vegetarian I get a lot more options there. We have some nummy gourmet ones in my area.

You have me curious now... I like yogurt with/in my curries and indian food sometimes. Does that count as one of the creepy white and creamy foods for you?

Lol, what a good question. I'm curious too :3
Pale Buttercup--Please! Join in the fun! The recipe party is elsewhere but food discussings will always happen here. HUZZAH!
BinkyC--desserts are probably what most people think they do best, thus why everyone gives desserts to neighbors. Casseroles were a big thing a while back..... my mom used to give those out (back when she cooked)
If you really want to make friends with them, you could invite them over for dinner, but if you figure out you hate them really quick, it can be awkward to get them to GTFO. This happened with a dinner guest I had once...... boyfriend of one of my bestests. The guy came over after my roommie and I had slaved to make a huge elaborate "welcome to our close knit circle of friends" types of dinners, and he didn't eat ANY of it.
Claimed he was on atkins to "loose weight" (he weighed approx. 110 lbs, towered over 6'). Ate a lettuce leaf, two rolls, and went for a smoke break.
needless to say that didn't go over so well.

Dahly--haven't heard back to-day. They say they want me though so I have my fingers crossed (I can give more detail in a PM but there's some stuff I don't want to bore people with, lol!)!!! SO MUCH FUN!
Whats the job you interviewed for today?
Ohhhhhhhhh <3 I'm so happy for you!!!

Wowie, new thread already huh? Cute name!
Nemaine, your starter questions are tough for someone as indecisive and scattered as I!
favorite foods Err...can I just say everything? I suppose I particularly love French, Middle Eastern, Italian, Vietnamese, Peruvian and Mexican cuisines; in no particular order of course.
least favorite food The only thing I have a hard time enjoying is goat milk. There are some goat cheeses I like but if it's too goaty I have a hard time eating it. I hate that I can't force myself to like it - it's like it's taunting me.
favorite thing to make I love braising cheap cuts of meat and game; it's like it magically transforms from something tough and gristly into something tender and silky just with some patience. I also love making pies and cakes - pies because they're easy and they're one of the few sweets my boyfriend will actually eat, cakes because I make the best darned cakes ever even though no one eats them.
favorite cuisine to eat out I enjoy eating out casually but I really feel like it's special if it's something I can't make at home so I really relish the rare occasions I get to dine at an uber fancy $200+/person type place. Molecular gastronomy is especially intriguing since most of it is impossible/impractical to do at home.

I am dying to try wd~50 in NYC, but my family and friends aren't really foodies, and they think it's (the molecular gastonomy stuff) just too weird! Actually, there are a ton or restuarants I am dying to go to now that I think of it, but that is high on the list.

Alright foodies, if any of you are around at all...
I made some homeade chicken broth today for my dad because he's sick and can only have clear liquids for a while. Any ideas what I can make with what's left? Don't just say chicken soup
Offline

I still don't wanna share my recipes...'cause I'm afraid someone'll steal them, sell them, and make a fortune off my creativity. D; I'm paranoid. But I can assure you, once you've tasted my guacamole, you'll see why.

Chicken broth is amazing in mashed potatoes. Actually better than butter, and healthier. >.> Or you can use it to make marinades for other stuff. Or even make stews.

LOL... guess what I had tonight? Guac... I'm really beginning to worry about this, were we separated at birth and just now finding each other.
Oooh, good idea with the mashed potatoes...

If you happen to be a half-Mexican that looks white, then yes, it's possible. >.>
Tonight, it's fish, fries, and queso. XD I've been wanting fries with queso for a while now. Weird ol' me.
They used to advertise that for Swanson's broth, and silly me, I listened. My grandmother's been making it that way since.

My mother did actually try it with the swansons once back when those commercials were around, but it tasted too salty for me (canned broth tends to be really salty). I'm glad you brought it up though, because with homemade stock I should be able to avoid that, and I think it will be really good.

It's never tasted salty to me. Did your mom use a lot or add salt afterwards? 'Cause then I'd see it that way. >.>
I'm too lazy to make real chicken broth...I just buy top ramen. XD I should, though. Or, at least, buy some chicken boullion to make sopa with.

That explains it. I think top ramen is super salty too, so I'm just probably more sensitive to salt than you. It's funny, my parents and I are like the three little bears when it comes to salt. If you put in the tiniest little pinch it's far to salty for my mom, my dad will pour about a tablespoon onto his food at the table, and I'm somewhere in the middle.

I know top ramen is super salty, though. That's why I love it. When I cook from scratch, though, I'm more moderate about the flavors.

RAMENS!!!! *O* I used to eat a ton but now I only can stand it when I'm dehydrated. Of course, then I craaaaa-aaave it......
Cryzilla--will you die of fright if I say the best potatoes I've ever made involved a full stick of butter and heavy whipping cream? Mmm mmm good. Could probably be wallpaper paste if it ever dried, but so CREAMY AND DELICIOUS.

Nemaine, the job that I interviewed for was at a chamber of commerce as a marketing/event planning specialist in the healthcare department. I'm really excited, but naturally- in my cynical eyes, I'm sure I've lost the job. Shame too, since it was perfect. I've talked it up too much to actually get it now.
But I'll know by Monday.
Heard back yet?

Noooo. ;-; i'm getting worried I talked it up too much too....

I bet it is delicious. But I'm already fat. My diet better not match that of the typical obese person... Otherwise, I may end up with the diabetes and heart failure that my doctor keeps promising me.

;-; but but .... so delicious..... so worth it...
;-;
I am interested in this chicken stock idea though. I think I will have to try it. It is probably healthier than my version :3 Of course, potatoes aren't exactly Health Food in the first place, so I'm not sure when I'll eat them (I haven't had mashed 'toes in... ohgod so long!).... but must try... how much stock do you typically put in?
