Well, I've never smoked a day in my life. So why am I writing a message here? Definitely not because I am trying to attack anyone, but because I'd like to give my experience as a child who grew up around second hand smoke. My mother smoked while she was pregnant with me and also when she was pregnant with my brother. Both of my parents smoked heavily when we were growing up. As a result we both have severe asthma. I moved away from home about 6 years ago, but the damage has already been done.

I've been smoking for about ten and a half year's now, and been trying to stop. It's just so hard to do so, when everyone around you is lightning up a cig! But, I'm determine to stop smoking now, my sister in law who lives with me is pregnant and I don't want to cause her any harm, due to secondhand smoking. Definitely today is a day to shed my bad habit's and take a walk!

Well I have quit. It hasn't even been 24 hours yet and I am about to pull my hair out. I know it is really vain but every time I want to smoke I start eating something and I am terrified of getting fat. I just don't know what to do. I can't chew gum because I have arthritis in my jaw. Does any one have some advice before I buckle and buy a pack?

I accept all NO STAKE challenges

I'm a similar case with my father being a chain smoker. Luckily I don't have asthma, but my lungs are weak and I have difficulties even on things as trivial as running after a bus.
One of my past boyfriends was also a smoker and I must tell you - kissing a smoker when you're not one yourself is quite unpleasant!
Another thing is that giving up smoking surely proves you are a strong-willed person who can decide about her life herself and keep the decisions. So it's a big improvement on your character that you can remember whenever you feel down about something, and say 'I'm a capable person after all!'
So good luck for all of you who want to stop, I keep my fingers crossed for you... and your (future) kids!

Hello people.
I'm a smoker and I've tried giving up. There is no excuses other than the fact I enjoy having a cigarette.
To make matters worse. I do stop smoking session with young people. I trained during a period when I had given up. It's hypocritical but I sypathise with people who are struggling to quit as I am.
I know exactly what it does to your body. I have all the gory pictures and the facts.
I've posted before to say my teeth are rotting at the bottom and I spit blood in the morning because I have gum disease.
To make matters worse I now have problems with my cervix (yes in my lady bits!) which they think is connected to my smoking.
So good luck to any one trying to give up. I'm working on it slightly more desperately than before now.
Well done to people who have givin up. I'WILL be joining the ex smokers shortly.

Im ok not smoking when im with my boyfriend. But when im at home, or with other people who smoke i really really want to smoke, and usually do. Ive stopped chainsmoking when i drink though, which is a big improvment.

I quit smoking cold turkey after smoking off and on for 10 years (i'd quit for a month here or there but always go back). So far it'll be 2 years in February but I'm not cheering just yet. It's an accomplishment definitely but I still get the urge and stuff, so I'm taking it day by day.
I quit because I play roller derby and wanted to be able to breath!

I have promised my daughter that I would quit on new years day...I have been smoking nearly 30 years and am up to 2 packs a day...I have tried everything. I can't take her crying because I am going to die (daughter fears my leaving deeply). I have to quit!!! I am so afraid of dissappointing her.

I am a smoker and have been one for almost 20 years (yes, I started young).
I did not notice an issue with pregnancy because of it. Just wanted to get that out of the way.
I would like to quit smoking, also. It's a filthy habit and it is quite costly, as many have said and, I need gas more than I do smokes.
I find that my biggest issues with it are that I am a stress smoker, a smoker out of boredom and because it seems to be an oral fixation (I do tend to drink coffee or chew gum and I used to be a horrid nail biter). Any advice on how to compensate or even do away with these issues would be great.

I'm always impressed by people who are able to give up smoking, or any other addiction for that matter, because it is sooooo hard. Those of you who have done it cold turkey without any help or support, you amaze me.
If there is any advice that I can give to those of you who can't quite seem to kick the habit, or you do for a while, but then it creeps back in is: DON"T EVER GIVE UP. The more times you try to kick the addiction, the more likely you will eventually be successful. Especially if you have a stretch where you are able to abstain for a while, but slip and start up again.
Also, it is ok to have cigarette cravings. Most anyone who has been addicted will continue to have cravings for many years, often for the rest of their life. But if you can learn to accept that it is ok to have those cravings without acting on them, it can make a big difference in your ability to quit. Don't hate the cravings because you can't change them, just accept them for what they are and then chose to live a more healthy life.
One last thing is, most people have multiple slips, but keep trying and those slips will become less and less frequent. It may take a while though (sometimes years) Just try not to get too frustrated and keep picking yourself up if you fall down. And remember you are not a bad or a weak person because you can't quit immediately. Nicotine addiction is really powerful and your body usually won't let go easily.
Good luck everyone. You really can do it and you do have a choice not to smoke.

Quitting smoking blows, but I've been a non smoker for a week now and shoveled the snow from my driveway without wheezing for the first time since we bought the house. The benefits are great but smoking was pretty great too. Anyone that quit a while ago that can tell me when you stop thinking about it daily?

I'd never usually think a book could make you do anything, be it diet or quit smoking. But my mum smoked for 25 years, and tried everything to quit, but apparently having read Allen Carr (not the comedian hehe) 's Easy Way To Stop Smoking, she immediately did. Apparently it brain washed her. She keep trying to push it onto me, but much to the dismay of this forum topic I quite enjoy smoking.
But yes! If anyone's quite desperate, give it a go. Luck of the good kind ladies

Weird I didn't notice this thread before..
Smoking is a bad thing.
It definitely is..
In Belgium, you're not allowed to smoke in public buildings.
Unfortunately lots of people still do it.
At school people are 'teasied' (is that the word?) if they smoke..

It's been 23 days today without cigarettes, about 10-14 days without nicotine replacements. I wish I could figure out how to put one of those smoke free banners on my sig but when I go to info it doesn't save the code.
I have avoided 805 cigarettes and saved about $171 dollars so far. My bf is a huge encouragement, he is so happy I've quit.
edited to add I have been having so very vivid dreams about sneaking cigarettes or smoking then lying to my bf about it. It has been the past week or so. I always tell him about the dream and we laugh about how silly it is but during the dream I feel so guilty but unable to stop myself. In the dream I feel so compelled to go smoke the huge cig butt I find but feel so guilty about it.

Thank You for this I haven’t been on here in awhile myself so I was actually popping on here hoping to find some kind of inspirational words to read and Thankfully here they are!
Your words are very wise as it IS quite frustrating to be this far out and STILL having cravings although I do quite clearly remember even back when I had once quit for a whole TWO years I even then still would get strong urges to smoke every once in a blue moon thankfully no one in my current circle smoke, so I’m in the clear this time but unfortunately my hubby isn’t so fortunate and has thus far slipped once already perhaps even more but he’s only told me of the one time so far and I’m concerned about him as he’s STILL wearing the lowest level patch even though we we’re supposed to stop wearing them like back around the 20th I stopped wearing mine on the 15th only because I couldn’t handle the itch factor and it was more maddening that the nicotine craving….

Hey Hon here is the banner site link that I have and for some weird reason it doesn’t accept the html code here but it does accept the BBC so hopefully that’ll help ya out also I know that when I was on the patches and also when I first got off of them I was having crazy butt dreams I’m pretty positive its due to the levels of nicotine leaving your system. I currently am finding myself fantasying about smoking especially after I found out that my hubby smoked a cigarette because he was the one who pushed us both to quit in the 1st place and then he buckled and now he’s having the more issues so it’s just aggravating me I guess…(this isn’t all directed at you BTW I’m just doing a general rant)
anywho hope the banner works for ya
